<text>. NAACP - the way it is By DIANE GRUNDY Most college students are aware of the function and activities of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) throughout the country, and probably most of all the progress and changes it has helped to institute in the South. Yet, have we ever considered the purpose and function of our college chapter of the NAACP? If so, maybe you perceived it as an esoteric club allowing the two per cent black population of this college to become the majority instead of the minority for one hour on alternate Monday evenings. Maybe you envisioned it as a racist organization that advocates that black and only black is best. Or maybe you haven't even given It a second thought. But to you that revere the NAACP as a student association progressively assimilating its minority members into a majority student body which culturally and ethnically different, then I confirm your reasoning as being sound, for the NAACP literally upholds its title--an association for the advancement of colored people--and not an association of colored people. The integrated college chapter Is seeking to fulfill its objectives in terms of helping the black student find acceptance on this campus without losing his identity. It is not hard for one to be accepted by any majority if one alters his patterns of behavior and ways of thinking to be congruent to those of the majority. But the real challange Is to be accepted for what you are--nothing more and nothing less. One of the major goals of the NAACP is to promote human relations on our campus. To truly achieve this goal would require 100% student, faculty, and administrative cooperation. For inasmuch as the club would like to see its goal fulfilled, its members can only do their fair share. Neither can the responsibility be left upon the College Human Relations Council to achieve a task which concerns and involves all. How can human relations on our campus be evaluated or measured? In terms of respect for the other person's rights, beliefs, and property, I would say. Definite progress has been made during the last year. For no longer are the signs announcing our club meetings and activities defaced, spat upon, and torn down. There is an increasing number of students and faculty members helping us to achieve our goals. There are more NAACP club members becoming involved and supporting other campus functions and organizations. But we still witness ugly remarks, chants, slogans, and signs humiliating our visiting sister college, Cheyney State, at home basketball games. Apathy, avoidance, and negative attitudes displayed towards not only black students but towards anyone who is different from the mass indicates a definite need for improvement. Maybe this is not an indication of prejudice but merely a sign of immaturity on the parts of those who spitefully and openly display their feelings and hostility. Without a harmonious student relationship as a state college we cannot expect such relationships as a university. The name change and status acquired can not do it alone. Therefore, let us collectively endeavor to attain a wholesome domestic atmosphere which will be a precedent for future years.</text>

<text>Equal" rights To the Editor: Open letter to Bill Holland: Before I start commenting on your "Reply to Milton," I would like to establish my position. I am totally against racism of any kind. I am irritated by the term "honky" as well as the term "nigger." I am a strong supporter of equal rights for blacks. When I say "equal" rights, I mean precisely that. At the risk of using a term that will probably be taken personally by some ultra-sensistive individuals, I would like to point out that there is a "certain group" which is racist in nature and is what I consider to be a threat to efforts for black equality. Unfortunately, this group consists mainly of blacks (no generalizations or racist implications intended). This is a group which discriminates against the whites and yells "white racism" when they don't get their own way. This is similar to a child's tantrum and can accurately be termed "puerile." These people are paranoids who are extremely self-conscious. When a group of five people who just happen to be black push me out of the way to get in line first in the dining hall, I am a white racist or a honky if I complain to them. If a group of people who just happen to be white do the same thing, then I am a normal person who doesn't like being pushed. Please forgive any accidental generalizations. My point is that there is a "certain group" which is creating friction because they are overly defensive and take everything personally. I would like to be able to sing "White Christmas" at Christmas time without having to worry about offending anyone. I know Mr. Collier both as a coach and as a past teacher of mine. I know him well enough to recognize the accusations in your reply to him as being "puerile". Apparently, you consider yourself a noble champion of the black cause. Well, Mr. Don Quixote, you can dismount from your high horse because you're not helping a thing. You know as well as anyone that Mr. Collier would have said the same things about whites who refuse to stand for the national anthem.Thank you for informing us, Mr. Holland, that by saluting the flag we are "bowing down to the white establishment." I'm sure most people didn't realize this. I don't know where you get these fantastic misconceptions from, but I can only guess that you represent that type of paranoid individual I mentioned earlier. You, Mr. Holland, are one of the biggest threats to black equality on this campus. I, however, will do more for you than you did for Mr. Collier by giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming that you don't realize the harm you're doing. Before you accuse me of white racism you might check with Bob Taylor, my fraternity brother who is truly a brother. You might also like to know that it was by my suggestion that Joe Bell, my former roommate, formed the first black fraternity on this campus. I don't care what color you are, Bill Holland, and I couldn't care less, but if you don't stop walking around with a chip on your shoulder, you won't help the black cause one bit. I believe, however, that someday there will be equality for blacks and whites in spite of people like you. Open your eyes, Mr. Holland. Look at the world and face it like a man - - not like a "boy." <text>Action to close gaps By JACKIE JONES Quad Correspondent "/ Care Week,, A survey taken last fall by WCSC Human Relations' Committee, led members to believe that there was a sense of alienation between the different disciplines at the college. Dr. Main, Coordinator of the Human Relations' Committee of sixteen, and committee members organized the "I Care" week campaign. They contended that action had to be taken to close the gap between diversified ethnic groups and between faculty and students at the college. Dr. Main, in an interview last week, stated, "The next two years of commitment for the "I Care" effort is only the beginning to bring all disciplines of the college to work in harmony." The focus behind "I Care" week was to improve all aspects of human relations at the college. On Tuesday, outside Main Hall, there were several booths set up representing WCSC's affiliated organizations. Among them were The International Student Association, the GAYS of West Chester, The New Student Orientation group, and the Sports Club Council representation. The idea behind the exhibits was to make students aware that these organizations exist and to get students more active and involved. A secondary purpose was to raise money for their clubs and to reduce the expense for trips they have planned. If you were there and felt like nibbling there was plenty of food to eat. On Wednesday evening, Barbara Coates, professor of health and physical education from South campus organized a schedule of events to better acquaint North and South campuses' faculty and staff members. There was a social hour followed by a performance at the dance studio, Health Services,Services, An Arts and Crafts' display and Athletic Training activities. It was a mild success in terms of the number of people who attended, according to Coates. In an interview with Coates, she remarked that it was a start at better communications, considering the geographical locations tended to isolate North and South campus affairs. She urged, "Certainty the efforts should not stop, and other planned endeavors should be carried out to further the college's human relations' goals." Coates and her committee were optimistic behind the efforts of "I Care" week. The Panel Discussion in SCUB on Thursday was aimed to take a look at the diversified ethnic group relations at the college and in the community of West Chester. There were a host of speakers discussing Human Relations and Human Rights of the 1960'5. All five speakers contended that there was a strong need for students to look at the problems of ethnic discrimination so that tension like this can be lessened at the college. Another purpose was to acquaint students with racism problems and have each student show his individual concern. The Black Student Union (BSU), represented themselves at the rally on Tuesday, at the Social Welfare Panel Discussion on Thursday, and at the South campus festivities to show their mutual concern dealing with the Human Relations ordeal at the college. There was a dinner on Friday night, held at President Mayo's residence, Tanglewood, for key figures in West Chester and surrounding areas to close "I Care" week's events. This was an opportunity for guests to talk informally about human relation concerns at the college and in the community.</text>

<text>"I Care" week begins; Campus gets involved By LYNN BOCKIUS Quad Correspondent This week (October 24-28), is "I Care" week. This is the "beginning" of a new twoyear campaign to promote a commitment to human relations among students and faculty. The program was developed by WCSC's Human Relations Planning Committee to focus on the personal rights of individuals, and problems dealing with communication and understanding that are found on campus and in West Chester. "I Care" week will begin on Monday, October 24, with the distribution of "I Care" buttons and literature explaining the campaign.Tuesday, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., students, faculty, and members of the community will assemble on the Quad outside Main Hall for speeches and exhibits supporting the ideas behind "I Care" week. There will be music and several WCSC clubs will be selling a variety of food and beverages. In case of rain, the festivities will be held in the main lobby of SCUB. On Wednesday, faculty and staff from the North and South campuses will get the chance to become better acquainted. The faculty from South Campus is scheduling a full day of events and will ask their colleagues from North Campus to join in on an individual basis in order to promote warmth and friendship. The Social Welfare Club will hold a panel discussion on "Human Relations: The Unfilled Promise", Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in SCUB, Rm. 243. Guest speakers will discuss the lack of progress in human relations in the United States since the 1960's and will apply their thoughts to the situation at WCSC and in the surrounding community. Thursday night there will be a dance sponsored by several diverse campus groups in Philips Ballroom. Music for different types of dancing such as disco, rock, soul, and salsa will be featured. Two local disc jockeys, The "E" Man and Luis Perez will be present to add to the festivities. WCSC student ID is needed for admittance. On Friday night, key figures in West Chester and surrounding areas are invited to WCSC for dinner and an evening of socializing. This program is being held in the hopes that there will be more interaction between the college and its community in the future. To help remind the campus community of the meaning behind "I Care" week, a special exhibit will be on display in Francis Harvey Green Library from October 18 until November 20. "Black Women: Achievement Against the Odds", presenting over 150 black women's professional accomplishments, is on loan from the Smithsonian Institute. In the future events such as Black and Spanish Art Festivals, expanded ethnic academic programs and human relations seminars will attempt to establish a permanent "I Care" attitude on campus. When asked why he thinks "I Care" week will be effective, chairman Dr. John Main explained, "We want to use this week to make people aware that problems do exist and to break down barriers and try to get the different groups together to talk. There's been an element of denial of the problems on campus that exist. We want to help people get rid of the denial and do something about the problems. This week is a call to commitment; if people care, then they should do something about it." </text>

The article explains the informative and entertaining elements of the performance as it "rewrite(s) history." The performance included portrayals of the first black inventor, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, Ernest Matzelinger the inventor of a machine in the shoe industry, Dr. George Washington Carver and Benjamin Bannaeker. The performance interacted directly with the audience, and openly discussed the issues with representations of black people. </text>
