Cheyney, WC officiols agree to cross-registration program By NADINE McCLEARY Five administrators from Cheyney and six from West Chester including the presidents agreed to cross-registration in a meeting Dec. 3 here, President James E. McKinley reported. They also plan to develop other means of cooperating in student and faculty exchange and program ventures. They decided to ask the Department of Education to provide funds for transportation between the institutions, since the suggestion came from the department, McKinley said. Cross-registration is a program in which students from West Chester can take some courses for credit at Cheyney and vice versa, according to Conrad Jones an attorney for the Department of Education. Jones said the department suggested the plan in their 80 page desegregation plan because of the proximity of the colleges and the federal government's pressure for greater integration.integration.According to a report from Secretary of Education John C. Pittinger, Pennsylvania's plan for desegregation of the state owned institutions has been rejected by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The department officials have announced they will be meeting with HEW early this month to find "in what areas our plan for desegregation . . . needs further definition." Jones cautioned, that the importance of the suggestion has been distorted. Crossregistration, he maintained, occupied one paragraph of the 80 page report on desegregation. McKinley said he has the HEW's report, but cooperation with Cheyney State College was initiated as a result of the department's plan to provide greater educational opportunities and to reduce duplication."
